Crossfire

(May contain some or all)
Chapter One
Chapter Two - (Coming Soon)

***********CORVIN***********
I might as well have stayed home last night….maybe I would have gotten more action. Instead I came here thinking she was going to put an end to my two week dry spell. As usual, she was already in the bed calling hogs. I love my girl but man, if she don’t spice it up soon or at least put me on a more regular schedule, there’s no telling what my man gone do. You know he has a head of his own sometimes…but all he requires is a little brain some times, if ya know what I mean. I haven’t even gotten that!

My alarm on my cell phone began to chime. I looked at it for a brief moment and then shut it off. I began to think to myself, why I even set the alarm when I’m here. Rose is always up two hours earlier than I, and always seems to wake me from her shower running anyway.
I got up to surprise her in the shower when my cell rang. "Who in the hell could it be this damn early." I answered.
"Hello?"
"What’s up?" She said. I really didn’t feel like hearing any of this today.
"What up D?" I said irritated, trying to get my hood on. Seems like the only language she could understand anyway, seeing as though I was speaking to a hood rat.
"Oh, I will be at work today, you feel me!"
Here we go with the dumb shit. "How the hell you gone be at work knowing yo ass got fired!"
"Oh, but I told you to make sure that that shit didn’t happen but yo weak ass chose otherwise—" I cut her off.
"I told you that you were going to get caught sooner or later…it just happened sooner than later! Deal with it and find a job on your side of town!" I was getting pissed from this useless conversation with someone who didn’t even finish the 9th grade. Trying to hurry before the shower cut off so I could sneak me a piece while Rose was still wet.
"Like I said! I will be at work and I got something for both yalls asses!"

Just then the phone went dead and so did the shower. "Damn!" I threw the phone on the bed and ran in the bathroom to try anyway.

I kissed her good morning, but all I received was a peck and a cringe. I tried again more seductively.

"Eww….you want to brush your morning breath away first?" she said to me.

I grabbed the Listerine that was sitting on the bathroom countertop and gave my mouth a quick rinse and spat in the sink. Yeah, yeah I know….but yall are talking to a desperate man who’s lower head has now taken over.

She looked at me with disgust as I tried to get some. I have to admit, I kind of chuckled inside because the shit was kind of funny.

She pushed me away with her arms. "Dang Corvin move! I’m trying to get ready for work and you’re making me late!"

"Why can’t I get none?" I yelled.

"Well for one, I’m not going to be walking around work dripping all damn day…beside, I already had my shower." She looked at me as if I had never taken one.

"Why—" I tried again but she cut me off.

"Why?....why?....why the hell can’t we get married?" Yep….there it was, she knew just how to shut me up and end the conversation.

*******Rose Royce******

While driving to work I realized I loved my man rather he wanted to marry me or not. Sometimes it got to me as to why he thought I wasn’t worthy enough. I was a 34 year old successful owner of my own law firm and I had my shit together. More than what I can say for some women my age. I was never one of those women who needed 2.5 kids, a husband, and a white picket fence with a minivan sitting in the driveway. Just the thought of a minivan made my skin crawl. I loved Corvin enough to marry him, but the marriage status was more so to complete my first-class image.

It just looked better to be married and settled than single and ready to mingle. In the back of my mind, I knew that Corvin was aware of my true meaning behind my marriage proposal. Yes, I proposed to him a few months back. I had all the documentation complete with PowerPoint slides and a prenup as to why this would be a good arrangement. For some reason he laughed it off and said, "I’ll marry you when you stop being a lawyer and start being a mother…I mean woman." Huh….whatever that means. He knows I don’t want kids; some men are so intimidated by a strong black woman. I guess if I was a paralegal and pregnant he’d be happier. "Image is everything Rose!" I heard my mother’s voice in my head as I came to and noticed that I had been driving on autopilot.

I had arrived at my office building 15 minutes later. As I was walking down the hall my paralegal Jai franticly tried to stop me. "Oh, Ms. Royce, you may want to stop and take a breather or two!"

"Now why would I want to do that Jai? I have things to do; I don’t have time for this right now!"

"Yeah, but um, sistagirl is in there all posted up and stuff like she own the place!"

"Sistagirl?" I questioned him as I opened the door to our law office. Before I could speak, Jai was already trying to explain.

"Ms. Royce, I told her to leave as soon as she walked her sassy behind up in here! I even threatened to call security but she was goin on about me not wanting to do that cause it would be bad for you, and I mightas well just sit my lil fag butt down!...Can you believe that! Girl yes she did! So as I was going toward the phone—"

"Jai!" I yelled at him because he was talking a mile a minute about nothing that mattered to me.
"Yes."
“This is what you’re doing!” I moved my fingers up and down to resemble his mouth moving.  “And this is what I want you to do…”  I stopped moving my fingers.
"Take a breath….and then go take a break…." He looked at me as if he didn’t understand seeing as though he just got there but nodded his head and walked away.

“What didn’t you understand about what I told you yesterday? The “You’re” or the “fired?”

“First of all, you need not step to me with all that ignorance you got going on!”  the tyrant said with sarcasm.

I wasn’t even going to deal with this foolishness. I walked towards the phone to dial security when Corvin had finally walked in looking surprised.

"Hold off on that Rose…" Corvin cut in.

"Excuse me?"

"Yeah…hold off on that Rose…" the foul mouthed talker spoke. I recoiled at the site of her arrogant ways and silently wished at this moment I wasn’t such a freakin lady.

"Yeah that’s right, if you try to get rid of me, I will take this whole damn place down!"

"Little girl!...this is a law office that you were supposedly working at in case you didn’t know. In short, you see ah…we have documentation that you falsified information on your application. Shoot….this won’t even make it to a court room!" I laughed because it surprises me how some people can be so ignorant.

"Yeah well how about sexual harassment?…."

"Sexual harassment?" I laughed hysterically. "Who Jai?" I pointed to him as he walked back into the office. "Fat chance at proving that honey!"

The little girl smirked at me as if she knew something that I didn’t. "Well ah….you know what they say….a picture is worth a thousand words."

She tossed an envelope my way. I didn’t want to continue to play along but by now the curiosity was getting the best of me. I hesitantly opened the envelope and peered inside to view its contents.

"Looks like to me, I just gave you about 5,000 words right there….."

I couldn’t believe me eyes. I looked up at Corvin and then back down to the envelope. I admit this little bitch had me stumped at the moment but I guarantee you not for long.

"Well here’s what I’m gone do….I’ma take the rest of the day off….WITH PAY and I’m gone hit yall up bright and early tomorrow morning. Aiight!"

I was too afraid to look up. To afraid to see their eyes meet for fear any question that I may have would be answered in their glares toward each other. How could I have been so stupid and blind?

Corvin finally spoke. "Well…what is it?"

I looked up at him and kicked him right where it counted.  I ran into my office and slammed the door shut.  No one questions or embarrasses me!  He’s supposed to have my back, not playing this broads little silly games.  Now I’m really pissed because by attacking Corvin like that, I’d let that little foolish girl know she got the best of me.

No sooner than I sat down in my seat, Jai lightly tapped on the door and cracked it open.

"Uh, if you need anything….just let me know."

I looked up at him, "You know what …find all you can on this Ms. Dream…."

"Hmm…if you ask me, this Ms. Dream is more like a nightmare honey—" I waved him off because he was walking into my office ready to have a seat and take this into a gossip mode that I really didn’t have the time for. "I’m on it…"

No sooner than Jai walked out, Corvin walked in.

"Baby—"

"What!?" I yelled. "Do you really want to have this conversation with me right now?"

"I know your upset but I just want to tell you that—"

"Upset?....I’m upset about the fact that you spread this infestation into my place of business!"

"Now hold on now, I work here too…Your not the only one who put into this—"

"Don’t try to grow balls now! Let’s not forget who owns the most of this law firm! The only reason I let you put some of your little money into MY business was to give you some type of status…. I didn’t want to be completely embarrassed by the man I was dating. Lets face it, the only thing you had going for you is your looks! You’re in Family Law….you handle timid little divorce and adoption cases, and not too many of those fly your way unless I fan them towards you!"

I could tell I was getting under his skin but there was nothing that he was going to do about it, he never does. I sat back down in my chair and fanned him off as if I was Nino Brown from New Jack City and said, "Leave me…" and he did.

I walked out of her damn office not because she told me but because I hate trying to have to reason with an unleveled headed person. I went into my office and locked the door and pulled a bottle of Hen out of my bottom desk drawer and took a swig. Hell I took a few.

It had been a while since I had a drink because Rose, doesn’t like the smell on my breath. I sat there and tried to think of why all this was happening to me. I picked up the phone and dialed Dream’s cell.

"What?" is how she answered the phone because I guess by caller ID, she could tell it was me.

“Why would you yell sexual harassment and then give her pictures of a baby?”

“First of all, you need to be askin why the hell would she be so pissed and threatened by them pictures?”

I had to admit that was a pretty good question that I had not thought to ask myself.  Why would Rose be threatened by those pictures?  I took another swig of Hennessy trying to think of the answer myself.

“You coming to see me?” the meddling hood rat spoke.

“When?...what?... no!”  I had to get myself together and make Rose my first priority here.

"Why you doing this to me?.... I mean, all I ever tried to do was help yo ass and this is the kind of thanks I get." I slurred my words because Hen was trying to take over although I tried hard to fight back.

"It’s not you I’m doing it to baby….you just got caught in the crossfire…."
